Abstract:

In this study, the effects of low, normal and high concentrations of the major polyamines (Agmatin, Putresin, Spermidin and Spermin) based on normal plasma levels on the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity were investigated. Enzyme activity measurements were performed spectrophotometrically. Measured absorbances were converted into units showing enzyme activity, tables and graphics were drawn. All polyamines increased the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. This increase was detected by priority, the highest doses of "agmatine (256%)> spermine (159%)> spermidine (158%)> putresine (130%)" and in low doses "putresin (16%)> spermidine (158%)> agmatin (%127)> spermin (%114)". High doses of agmatine and low doses of putresin were effective to increase enzyme activity. As a result, all of the polyamines are found to be positive modulators that increase the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme. Based to these results, in many diseases with glucose-6-FDH deficiency or insufficieny, polyamines have the potential to be used therapeutically. New and comprehensive studies that will be done on this subject can be important to contribute to the treatment of many diseases.
