Abstract:Probiotics are live, non-pathogenic microorganisms. Many of these microorganisms exist in healthy human intestinal flora in a symbiotic relationship. Probiotic microorganisms are used in the treatment, cure and prevention of many chronic diseases. This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the probiotic food consumption preferences of university students studying in the field of Health Sciences (Faculty of Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine) at Sivas Cumhuriyet University between July and October 2023. In the study, information such as general information about the students, body weight and height, knowledge level of probiotics, probiotic food consumption status and frequency, and where they purchased probiotic supplements were administered through an online survey form. Statistical analyzes of the survey data were analyzed with the SPSS Ver:23 (IBM SPSS Statistics V23.0) package program, and the Chi-square test was applied to compare descriptive statistical methods (frequency) and qualitative data. Four hundred thirty-nine students were included in the study and 56,3% of the participants were between the ages of 18-21. While 69,9% of the students participating in the study stated that they knew the term probiotic, the rate of students consuming probiotics was determined as 46,5%. 80,2% of students studying in the field of health sciences state that probiotics have an effect on health. The percentage of students who pay attention to nutritional content when purchasing probiotic foods is 41,7%, and the percentage of students who state that they benefit from probiotic foods is 53,3%. Students of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine constitute the group with the highest awareness of consuming probiotic foods. It was observed that students of the Faculty of Health Sciences (32,0%), Medicine (27,6%) and Dentistry (18,8%) paid attention to the content of probiotics when purchasing them (p<0.05). Students from the Faculty of Medicine (27,9%) and Health Sciences (27,1%) responded that probiotics have beneficial effects on health when taken in sufficient amounts. Due to the protective effects of probiotics on health, students who will work in the health field should be given sufficient information about probiotics. The importance of probiotic consumption should be explained, and the awareness level of these students should be improved.
