Abstract:

The ability to gain a sense of cultural belonging, which can be defined as adapting to the cultural structure of the individual, is an important goal of the Religious Culture and Ethics lessons. This research was conducted in order to determine the functionality of the Religious Culture and Ethics courses, which are taught in our country, in terms of providing students with a sense of cultural belonging. A sense of cultural belonging, which enables crowds to become a society, is indispensable for social unity and solidarity. In our social structure where many different races, sects and identities live together, it is of vital importance for our future for individuals to gain a sense of cultural belonging. Our religious structure has a great impact on the formation of our cultural values. From our architecture to our music, from our literature to our daily speeches, from our dressing up to our weddings, the effects of the religion of Islam can be seen in all aspects of our lives. At the point of establishing our social unity, an important way for us to preserve our cultural values and pass them on to future generations is education. At this point, important tasks fall on the Religious Culture and Ethics lessons. In our research, after focusing on the concepts of culture and civilization, information was given about Islamic culture. Then, the functionality of the Religious Culture and Ethics course curriculum and textbooks was evaluated with the method of document analysis in order to gain awareness of cultural belonging. Finally, with the scale applied to 1008 students from 8 different school types at the secondary education level, it was tried to determine the extent of the competence of the Religious Culture and Ethics lessons to gain a sense of cultural belonging.
