In this study, total oxidant status , total antioxidant status, oxidative stress index and lipit peroxidation levels were investigated in 35 type II diabetes mellitus patients and 35 healting controls. The aim of the study was determined the importance of these parameters in the diagnosis and treatment of type II diabetes mellitus. A statistically significant difference was found between patients and controls for the mean levels of glucose (t=9,24, p<0,05), Hemoglobin A1c (t=13,5, p<0,05), Malondialdehyde (t=2,194, p<0,05), total oxidant status (t=2,86, p<0.05), oxidative stres index (t=3.94, p<0,05). However, the mean levels of total antioxidant status (t=0,87, p=0,39) was not statistically different between two groups.Increased levels of lipid peroxidation and oxidative stres were observed in the diabetic patients in the present study. Therefore, we thought that oxidative stres may be a factor in the complications of diabetes mellitus and antioxidant supplements in addition to the antidiabetics may be useful in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
