Abstract:In Islamic history, marriage between Muslim men and Christian or Jewish women was permitted, but controversial. It is permitted in the Qur'an but, ideally, partners who get married should be Muslims and of equal social status. In the UK, marriage between Muslims and non-Muslims may happen without having to conform to religious rules or familial preference. These marriages may influence the faith identification of parents and children. The research question is: "to what extent and how are parents in interreligious families able to transmit their religion to their children who are growing up in the UK?" In the study was explored and described the religious and cultural identity formation of children in interreligious families. How young people in such families come to identify themselves in relation to their parents' religions and which factors influence their own religious beliefs. It was assessed the religious beliefs, practice, and traditions that are being transferred to children of interfaith marriages involving Turkish Muslims and non-Muslims through the collection and analysis of data from questionnaire forms and interviews, in order to answe the impact of religious socialisation (formal or informal) and religious education on children's religious identity and responses. The eligible couples were found by snowball method. The recruitment process was accomplished after finding the 32 eligible couples and 15 children. Semi-structed interviews and the questionnaire forms served as the primary method of data collection. Interviews were conducted in Turkish and in English. Audio records were made with the permission of each respondent. The English responses were translated to Turkish later. All interviews were completed by the researcher in 10 months. Each respondent was interviewed individually. Most interviews were conducted in places such as cafes, restorants or work places on the request of respondents. The qualitative data analysis software NVivo and statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) were used to analyze the data. In conclusion, the researcher compared the similarities and the differences between the concepts.
