Özet

Neospora caninum is a parasitic protozoan in the phylum Apicomplexa. The final
hosts of the agent are carnivores in the family canidae, and the intermediate hosts are farm
animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo, and horses
. N.caninum causes abortion,
stillbirth, fetal deaths and consequently, serious economic losses in cattle and goats. The
annual economic loss caused by
N.caninum is estimated to be US$ 1.298 billion globally
and US$ 40.5 million in Turkey in cattle breeding. The mean seroprevalence of
N.caninum
in Turkey is 14.7% in cattle and 4.65% in goats. The aim of this pilot study was to determine
the anti-
N.caninum antibodies in cattle and goats in Sivas province of Turkey. For this aim,
blood samples were taken from 110 cattle and 86 goats and examined with a commercial c
ELISA (VMRD, USA) kit. Seropositivity was detected in seven (6.36%) cattle and four
(4.65%) goats. With this study, anti-
N.caninum antibodies were detected for the first time in
cattle and goats in Sivas region, and it was seen that the prevalence of the agent in this region
both in cattle and goats was below the average of the world and Turkey.
