Özet

Swelling soils are undesirable due to the damages they may cause to the engineering structures. It is important to define swelling behaviour of a soil material correctly in preliminary studies and take appropriate precautions accordingly. Although there have been several procedures to identify swelling soils, there is no universally accepted simple method to determine these soils. It is most common to evaluate swelling behaviour of soils by using indirect methods. One of the methods used for this purpose is the swell potential chart which is based on Casagrande's plasticity chart. Because of the factors influencing the liquid limit test results, some uncertainties can arise when using this approach. In this paper, a fuzzy classification approach was suggested for the swell potential chart in minimizing these uncertainties. In the scope of the study, the degrees of membership of the evaluation points on the chart were defined by considering sigmoid membership functions. Independent variable of the membership functions was taken as the liquid limit value. The proposed approach was applied on a series of data, and the results were discussed.
