Abstract:

In order to be able to talk about a sustainable business, non-financial information is also needed in addition to financial information. The purpose of this study is to compare the impact of sustainability indicators on financial performance of businesses in the Borsa İstanbul (BIST) Sustainability Index (XUSRD) and the Global 100 Sustainability Index, which ranks the most sustainable businesses globally. Within the scope of the research, analyzes were conducted on data from 30 national businesses operating outside the finance sector in the BIST Sustainability Index between 2016-2021 and 14 businesses operating outside the finance sector in the Global 100 Sustainability Index between 2016-2021. Panel data regression method was used in the analyzes. According to the analysis results, it was concluded that there is no significant relationship between the sustainability activities and financial performances of national enterprises included in the BIST Sustainability Index, but there is a significant relationship between the sustainability activities and financial performances of enterprises included in the Global 100 Sustainability Index. It was observed that the sustainability indicators of enterprises included in the Global 100 Sustainability Index positively affected the return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) the most, while they negatively affected the Tobin Q (Q) ratio.
