Corrosion, the degradation of materials through environmental reactions, poses significant economic and safety risks, particularly in metals. Industries like electronics, automotive, and aviation face severe challenges due to corrosion. In electronics, printed circuit boards (PCBs) and sensitive components degrade under humidity, temperature fluctuations, and chemical exposure, leading to conductivity loss and system failures. The automotive sector battles corrosion from rain, snow, salt, and chemicals, which compromise engine parts, exhaust systems, and chassis, endangering performance and safety. Similarly, aircraft and spacecraft suffer from corrosion due to high-altitude humidity, pollutants, and temperature extremes, risking structural integrity, aerodynamic efficiency, and operational costs. Surfactants emerge as a promising solution, forming protective films on metal surfaces to inhibit corrosion. Their integration into water-based coatings, paints, and cleaning agents combines effectiveness with environmental sustainability. For instance, surfactant-enhanced automotive paints improve metal durability, while biodegradable variants offer eco-friendly alternatives. Beyond corrosion prevention, surfactants enhance cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency in production, supporting durable and sustainable technologies. This chapter highlights the cross-industry impact of corrosion and underscores surfactants’ dual role in combating degradation and advancing green innovation. Their adaptability positions them as critical tools for long-term material resilience in demanding environments.
