Özet

Background: In patients with lumbar disc herniation, the pain is sometimes to severe that the individual cannot provide self-care. In this case, the importance of dealing with pain emerges. Objectives: The study was carried out oevaluate the effect of pain experienced in individuals with lumbar disc hernia on self – care ability and the methods of coping with pain. Methods: This cross–sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 100 patients who were admitted to the Brain and Nerve Surgery out patient clinic and hospitalized with the diagnosis of lumbar disc hernia without surgical intervention between March 15-May 31 2019 in a university hospital. In collecting research data; Patient Information Form, Visual Pain Scale, Pain Management Methods Form, and Self–Care Ability Scale were used. Kolmoggorov-Smirnov, Variance analysis, Tukey test were used for statistic analysis. Results: In our study, a strong negative correlation was found between pain and self-care ability (r=-.770; p=.000). A statistically significant difference was found between the self–care ability score averages of the participant according to their educational status (p=.031) and the self–care ability of the literate Patients was lower than the patients with university degrees. The most preferred method for coping with pain was 84% use of pain medication, and the least preferred method was acupuncture at 1%. Conclusion: In our study, reducing pain will increase self–care power in Patients with lumbar disc herniation. Training programs for pain reduction are recommended for healthcare professionals.
