Zayn al-'Abidin b. Muhammad al-Katib al-Shirazi was an accomplished book artist who was active in the second half of the fifteenth century in Iran. Eleven manuscripts that were signed by him, located in different collections around the world, are known of. The illumination, calligraphy, and bindings of all these manuscripts will be evaluated in this article. The colophons of two manuscripts, Külliyat-I 'Imâd (TIEM, no. 2030) dated 863/1459 and Divan-i Nizârî-i Kuhistanî (Çorum, HPYEK, no. 1955) dated 865/1460, which he transcribed, state that Zayn al-'Abidin b. Muhammad al-Katib was responsible for both their illumination and binding. A detailed comparison of the illuminations in these two manuscripts with other manuscripts signed by him suggests that the illumination of some of the other manuscripts may also have been his work. The high quality of the binding of his signed work, Külliyat-i 'Imâd (TIEM, no.2030), from the middle of the fifteenth century, shows that he was a master bookbinder who must have produced some other bindings during the Aqqoyunlu period as well. His calligraphy style demonstrates his mastery as a scribe of Shiraz origin. Zayn al-'Abidin b. Muhammad al-Katib al-Shirazi, who worked for Timurid, Qaraqoyunlu, and Aqqoyunlu patrons, can be seen to have been an accomplished artist in the field of the arts of the book in the second half of the fifteenth century.
