In classical Turkish poetry, the mersiye is one of the most powerful genres in which the pain and grief felt in the face of death are expressed in a poetic language. In this genre, poets, in the poems they compose upon the death of individuals who generally hold an important place in society, articulate not only the loss of an individual but also the deep mourning that this loss creates within the community. In mersiyes, mourning is conveyed not merely through images of tears and sorrow, but also through a world of metaphors in which even nature does not remain indifferent to death. Descriptions of nature—such as the sun not rising, roses withering, nightingales falling silent, and the night donning black—are used to show how great a void the loss of the deceased has created. Such expressions also emphasize the cosmic dimension of death within the unity of nature and humanity and symbolize the universality of mourning. In this study, the reflections of mourning in mersiyes on human, natural, and cosmic elements are examined. The sample of the research consists of mersiyes from different periods and poets that clearly reflect the symbolic and imaginative dimensions of mourning. A qualitative research method has been adopted in the analysis; the texts have been evaluated through a thematic and classificatory approach. In this context, the domains in which mourning manifests are addressed under a few basic topics: human, natural, and cosmic. The study aims to reveal that mersiyes are not merely expressions of individual grief, but reflect a holistic conception of mourning that encompasses both humanity and the universe together.
