ABSTRACT
Scabies; It is a skin disease characterized by itching, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei hominis,
transmitted by direct contact. Epidemics occur from time to time due to various reasons such
as earthquakes, migration, hot/cold weather conditions, age, gender and socioeconomic level of
the individual. It is among the important diseases that may cause new epidemics, especially in
our country, which has received immigration in recent years. There has been a serious increase
in scabies cases, which is of great importance for public health, recently. Resistance to
permethrin used in treatment reduces the success rate of the treatment. Agents must remain in
the body for at least eight hours and must be reused if removed. Compliance with treatment
may decrease, especially in children. In this study, the keywords S.scabiei, scabies, essential
oils were scanned from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and
studies starting from 2022 were compiled. In the light of the information obtained, studies on
tea tree oil, clove oil and lemongrass oil are prioritized in the treatment of S.scabiei. When the
content of these essential oils is examined, terpinen-4-ol, which has antimicrobial properties;
monoterpene derivative phenol compound carvacrol; In addition to its antimicrobial properties,
the phenolic molecule eugenol, which has analgesic and antioxidant properties obtained from
various plants such as cloves, cinnamon and bay leaves, and geraniol, another compound with
antioxidant, anti-cancer and neuroprotective activities, have been found to have an ovicidal
agent effect against the eggs of S.scabiei.
As a result, scabies infestations are an important public health problem for the whole world.
However, due to drug resistance, detailed studies in vitro and in vivo may open the door to new
drug candidates. According to the results of this review study, essential oils promise candidate
drugs in the treatment of scabies.
