Özet

Some historically lost literature pertains to musical knowledge. Numerous such texts are no longer extant because private collectors sometimes stored significant original manuscripts on their shelves. In addition, texts were housed in libraries and transferred to overseas libraries during wars, never to be discovered again. Consequently, scientific disciplines could not benefit from such single-copy texts. We know the titles of some forgotten works through references to them in other works by their authors. We also know citations made to them before disappearance. We can utilize the information obtained about lost manuscripts from the extant literature to research such lost works and notify scholars about their existence. Abd al-Qadir Maraghi wrote the most important extant texts on musical theory: for example, Câmi'u'l-elhân (Jâmi̜ al-alhân), Makâsidu'lelhân (MaqâSid al-alhân), and Şerh-i Edvâr (Sharh al-Adwâr, a commentary on safî al-Dîn al-Urmawî's Kitâb al-Adwâr). These texts are still found in libraries and offer information about Maraghi's lost works, including Kenzü'lelhân, Risâle der Istıhâb-ı Gayr-i Ma'hûd, and Kitâb-ı Lahniyye. The present article attends comparatively to such information. Kenzü'l-elhân (Qanz al-alhân) is known as a lost text attributed to Maraghi. However, the scientific community is not even aware of the existence of Maraghi's other lost works, Risâle der Istıhâb-ı Gayr-i Ma'hûd and Kitâb-ı Lahniyye. This paper combines all available information on these works with evidence obtained from other texts by Maraghi.
