Plantago major L. is
perennial plant that
belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. More recent ethnopharmacological studies
show that Plantago plants are used
in the treatment of a number of diseases by using as an anesthetic, antiviral,
anti-inflammatory, astringent, anti-helmintic, analgesic, antihistaminic, anti
rheumatic, antitumor, anti-ulcer, diuretic, expectorant and hypotensive in
traditional medicine in almost all over the World. In this study, Plantago major plant
materials were collected from Yıldızeli, Sivas province in spring-summer season
of 2020 year. Identification of the plants were performed by Doç. Dr. Mustafa
Sevindik. Water
and ethanol were used as extraction solvents and extraction yield was 6.96 and 5.81
%w/w respectivelly. Human gastric cancer cell line (MKN-45), Human prostate
cancer cell line, (PC3), Mouse fibroblast cell line (L929), Human cervical
cancer cell line (HeLa), Human gliablastoma
cell line (U87) and human colon adenocarcinoma (HT29) cell lines
were used for cytotoxic activities by using MTT cell proliferation kit. As a
result of MTT experiments, IC50 values were calculated using Graphpad
program. SPSS 22.0 (IBM Corparation, Armonk, New York, United States) program
was used for statistical data analysis. Both plant extracts inhibited HeLa
and U87 cell lines in medium level and there was a low inhibition on MKN-45,
PC3, L929, HT29 cell lines’ proliferation.
