Prof. KAYA YILMAZ

Dr. Kaya Yılmaz earned his undergraduate degree in History Education at Marmara University, graduating as the top-ranked student among 42 graduates. Following his graduation, he served as a history teacher in public schools in Sivas and Gümüşhane, where he developed extensive classroom-based experience that would later inform his academic work.

Having succeeded in the highly competitive nationwide YLSY examination administered by ÖSYM, he was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of National Education to pursue graduate studies in the United States. After achieving a qualifying score on the TOEFL, he was admitted to the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he completed his master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Social Studies Education. He subsequently gained admission to the University of Georgia after successfully completing the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and earned his PhD in Social Science Education.

Dr. Yılmaz received the title of Associate Professor in 2010 and was appointed to an associate professorship at Marmara University in 2014. He was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 2015. His research and teaching focus on social studies education, history education, teacher education, teacher cognition, curriculum development, contemporary learning theories, pedagogical approaches, and historiography. Grounded in a reconstructivist educational philosophy, his scholarship emphasizes the role of education in social transformation, civic agency, and critical citizenship.
